Elder Mike Prince leads our Sunday morning discipleship class, which meets at 10:00 a.m., except for the first Sunday of each month.
Philosophy
Our discipleship class is structured around the ten spiritual disciplines outlined in Don Whitney’s book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. We have worked our way through this book a couple of times over the years and we believe that the disciplines Whitney outlines are the same fundamental practices that have always formed the heart of Christian Discipleship. Those disciplines are as follows:
Bible Intake | Prayer |
Worship | Evangelism |
Serving | Stewardship |
Fasting | Silence & Solitude |
Journaling | Learning |
History
For over the past decade, each study we have embarked on has focused on one of these disciplines in particular, though often related to others as well. Recent studies include a study of Church history, a study of Watchfulness as a necessary element to persevering in the disciplines, a detailed look at the book of Haggai, and a study based on John Piper’s book, A Hunger for God.
Most recently we completed a study of the Decalogue and, before that, A Survey of Church History video series taught by Dr. W. Robert Godfrey and produced by Ligonier Ministries.
Definitions
From time to time, during our Lord’s Day morning discipleship class, or other discipleship opportunities, we formulate definitions to better help us understand concepts found in God’s Word. Those definitions can be found here: Discipleship Definitions.
Current Study
In August of 2024, we began a study of the spiritual autobiography of Augustine, the Confessions. Augustine is a towering figure in both Church History and Western Philosophy. As those who stand in the Reformed tradition, we owe much to this pastor from North Africa.
Our plan is to cover one book of the Confessions each time we gather. If you would like to follow along, we’ll be posting audio of the lessons and any notes here.
Scripture Memory
Scripture memory is an important aspect of discipleship. In our study of the Decalogue, we encouraged our church to memorize Exodus 20:1-17.
There are many tools to help you memorize Scripture. Some prefer handwriting them while others prefer a more audible method. The Bible Memory app is a great tool that can be used to commit Scripture to memory and offers options for typing out the text or using speech recognition to recite the text. We have created a group on The Bible Memory app if you would like to follow along and encourage one another in the process. Currently, Exodus 20:1-17 and the Baptist Catechism are uploaded to the group.
Below is a link to the app’s website, download buttons for Android and Apple, and a link to join our memory group.
