The Confessions of Augustine is one of Church History’s most significant and widely read works. Many consider it to be one of the first great autobiographies. It is that, though Augustine himself composed it as a prayer to God. Augustine is a fascinating figure who looms large not only in Church History but in Western philosophy as well. He is the most quoted source, outside of the Bible, in John Calvin’s famous Institutes of the Christian Religion. Calvin generally quotes Augustine approvingly while occasionally offering dissent.
